Getting Spring Fever - What flowers to plant?

Good morning everyone:)

 I think I am getting spring fever lol. I have been sitting here thinking of some new perennial flowers to plant. I have lots of hostas and lilies but looking for something different that will thrive in the shade ( as I have lots of shade ).

 Any advice on what to plant?

I love to plant plants that continue to bloom all summer. Ice plant does that and comes back every year. You can split it and just sit it in the dirt.

You know last year, hubby bought some cheap flowers from the Dollar Store and Wal Mart... they were in the pack.. all kinds of wild flowers.. he dug the holes for our great niece to plant them as something for her to do and to teach her how things grow...
They were lovely... So big and colorful... we were so excited as we waited for the first sight of them to pop their heads up... but of all our flowers, I think I favored these the best.. We were amazed at the ones called Cosmos, they arent supposed to come back year after year but yes, they do, and you do have to watch as these things grow anywhere the wind blows or the birds drop them.... we are thinking of using them as a border this year along side our fence... they grow tall and are so colorful... In one packet we had all different colors.. white, purples, pinks,

All I know is my mom plants lots of petunias every year.

I don't know what planting zone you are in, but you might look into growing tuberoses. I used to grow them in New Hampshire, but the bulbs have to be dug up and replanted each year, that far north. They are the most beautifully fragrant, white blooms. The stalks are 12" to 18" high with long leaves at the base and flowers at the top (sort of similar to gladioli growth habit).

I bought the bulbs from White Flower Farm which has a wonderful catalogue.

It is ~Snowing Here Today! we already have a few inches of Snow on the ground and expecting 2 to 4 more inches. My Planting thoughts have been put on hold, But

False Goat's Beard, Lily of the Valley, and various ferns come to mind. It might be better to google shade perennials and see what appeals to you the most.

I have tons of ferns growing wild in back of my house :) Hmm Lilies of the Valley is a good idea and they smell so good too:) Will have to look up False Goat's Beard as i never heard of that one. Thanks:)

Oh, I see that Susan has already mentioned Lily of the Valley... they don't require any work at all. Peonies are growing right next to the Lily of the Valley so maybe??

The house we moved to five years ago is almost 100% shade and set in a forest, so it was hard learning how to garden here compared to total sun gardens. Add ferns, coneflowers, sepia, bee balm, vinca vine, garden phlox.

Coneflowers do well in the shade. I am starting my veggie and flower seeds right now indoors. Then they will go into a cold frame. Long process, but I love doing it.

I am planting Pampas Grass...pink and ivory, as tall as I can find and LOTS of it....on the one side of our house, as we have some totally "creepy, trashy" neighbors and I want a privacy fence, badly....hubby refuses to pay to have a wooden one put up, and somebody told me that Pampas Grass would be perfect, as it can get to be 11 to 12 ft. tall and really thick........I plan to buy a bunch of it but am not sure when the best time is to plant....need to do some research, I guess! I am so excited...I will finally have something to block out those nasty people!!!

Bleeding Hearts! They're a great shade flower. My mother has a lot of them but alas, they don't do well here in the SC heat.

Periwinkles! They grow and bloom anywhere. I'm planting some this year. Don't know whether to go with mixed colors or all white or all pink ..... decisions, decisions.
